Hanah Smith: What Energizes You?

by Hanah Smith

Once upon a time, women in the workforce were sold a glossy idea that the pinnacle of girl bossing is doing it all and making it look good. But should we want that? It’s great for the other 49% if women take on more than their fair share. But doing what you want and doing “it all” are not synonymous.

Doing it all will destroy you.

I know work feels busy right now. Really busy. I hear this consistently from the people I consult with, speak to, and coach – people all across the corporate ladder. It’s no wonder that so many of us are at risk for burning out, and that the risk of burnout for women is even more acute because of the volume of unpaid labor being done at work and at home. I write and speak a lot about addressing underpaid and undervalued labor in the workplace because it is such a pervasive issue.

When things get busy, our default mode is usually to put our nose to the grindstone. Dig in. Keep our foot on the gas. (Insert any cliche phrase you want here about hustling. ChatGPT will quickly give you 20). It’s common practice to just push through.

Unfortunately, this approach doesn’t really serve us. Contrary to what we’ve been taught (and what I used to believe), I say that when things get busy that is exactly the time to take a step back. You need to stop leaning into everything and, instead, lean into what energizes you.

Now you may be thinking, that’s a great concept, Hanah, but the work still has to get done. And you’re right. But doing what energizes you and being productive are not opposing forces. They go hand in hand.
