LIKABILITY, CURIOSITY, AND RESILIENCE BY KARIN HALL

As a proud Palette member, I got to sit on the couch and participate in their monthly Pro Talk. And it was nothing less than magical!

Sharing and learning with Emily Blumette of Likeable and Jennifer Hendricks-Fogg from the Logan Strong Foundation, along with connecting with the powerful and empowering women of Palette was exactly what the Dr NP ordered and needed!

Let me break it Down:

We often think of “being likable” as a soft skill—something you either have or you don’t. We see curiosity as a trait of the eternal student, and resilience as something forged in fire, earned only through hardship. But the truth is, these three qualities are deeply interconnected. They form a braid, a collective strength that shapes not only who we are in healthcare, but who we are as human beings.

Likability: The Bridge of Connection

Being likable is not about pleasing everyone or performing for approval. It is about authenticity, about showing up as yourself in a way that creates trust and safety. When people like you, it isn’t because you’re perfect—it’s because you are present, real, and open to connection. In healthcare, this can be the difference between a patient who hides their truth and one who feels seen and heard. In life, it is the bridge that allows relationships to deepen.

Curiosity: The Engine of Growth

Curiosity is the willingness to ask questions, even when the answers might be uncomfortable. It is the courage to say, tell me more, instead of rushing to judgment or resolution. In medicine, curiosity is what prevents us from missing the root cause—it allows us to see patterns, to dig deeper, to connect dots. In life, curiosity keeps us humble. It reminds us that every person has a story worth hearing, and every moment has something to teach us.

Resilience: The Root of Endurance

Resilience is often mistaken for toughness. But it is not about never breaking—it is about bending and returning, again and again. It is about adapting without losing yourself. In healthcare, resilience is what keeps us at the bedside, in the clinic, or in the chaos of the ER when things get ugly. In life, resilience is what allows us to show up on the days we don’t feel like it, to carry both the beautiful and the brutal without giving up.

The Collective Weave

These three qualities—likability, curiosity, and resilience—are not separate threads. They are woven together.

When you are curious, you become more likable, because people feel your genuine interest in them. When you are resilient, you maintain the energy and stability that allow you to stay curious and remain likable, even when times are tough. And when you are likable, you create networks of support that make resilience easier to sustain.

This is how we show up—not just in the good, but in the bad and the ugly. This is what makes us human, what makes us trustworthy, what makes us whole.

In the end, it is not perfection that defines us. It is our interconnectedness—how our qualities play off each other, how our stories weave together, how our collective humanity creates something greater than the sum of its parts.

Because who we are is not just what we do.
Who we are is how we show up.
Every day. In every way. Together.
