“The Psychology Behind Why People Really Move”
Most people think I sell homes for a living…
but the truth is, I don’t.
What I really do is help people navigate some of the biggest identity shifts of their lives.
Because after helping over 500 families move… I can tell you—
people don’t move because of square footage.”
They move because something in their life has changed… or needs to.
In real estate, we talk a lot about bedrooms, bathrooms, and price points.
But behind every move, there’s usually a deeper reason:
- A new baby
- A divorce
- A job change
- A loss
- Or sometimes… a quiet realization that life doesn’t feel the way it used to
And the home becomes part of that turning point.
It’s not just ‘we need more space.’
It’s ‘we’re becoming a different version of ourselves.’
And I actually saw this in a really powerful way recently.
I’m selling a home right now, and as you probably know, buyers and sellers almost never meet until the closing.
But during one of the inspections… they happened to run into each other.
They started chatting for a few minutes—nothing unusual.
And then my seller… just started to tear up.
Because she realized—
the buyers standing in front of her…were exactly who she and her husband were 28 years ago when they bought that same home.
Same stage of life. Same excitement. Same beginning.
And in that moment, it wasn’t about the house anymore.
It was about everything that had happened inside that house over the last 28 years…
and seeing it all come full circle.
That moment stuck with me, because it reinforced something I see all the time.
People stay longer than they should… because it feels safe.
And when they finally decide to move, it’s rarely just a logical decision.
It’s emotional first… and then we make the numbers work.
And I’ve never had someone say,
‘I wish I waited longer to make a change I knew was right.’
And I don’t think this is really about real estate.
I think we all have a version of this:
- Something we’ve outgrown
- Something we’re holding onto
- Or something we know we’re ready for… but haven’t acted on yet
We wait for the perfect time.
But the truth is… clarity usually comes after the decision, not before.”
So if there’s one thing I’ve learned from being part of these moments, it’s this:
People don’t move because they found the perfect house.
They move because they’re ready for what’s next.
And the house just becomes the place that holds that next chapter.
